FeBREWary Feature on JAFB
JAFB – a downtown Wooster staple named for the acronym, Just Another F***ing Brewery. Personally, we think JAFB was selling themselves short with this humorous name, as they are anything but “just another brewery.” Though their beers are phenomenal, they’re more than just a brewery. As Brewmaster Paul Fryman describes it, “A brewery where people can gather, meet their neighbors and be comfortable is a real cool thing. Wooster is perfect for that type of vibe and brewery.” We agree that JAFB is a just the spot Wooster, Ohio needed.
The story starts like so many others – with a college student and a love for beer – but this student’s passion wasn’t just for the buzz. Paul Fryman developed a true appreciation for beer in his four years at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Unlike most college students, Paul wasn’t satisfied with only consuming beer is mass quantities, he had a bigger idea – to brew it in mass quantities!
After a semester abroad in Germany, where brewing is a centuries-old art form, Paul decided he would dedicate his senior thesis to microbreweries and their impact on the American Beer Industry.. When Paul received his degree, he was fully ready to head out into the world and make his mark brewing beer.
His first stop after graduation was Great Divide Brewing in Denver, known for their massive impact on the Colorado Brewing Scene. From there, Paul moved to Lake Placid, New York to work with Great Adirondack Brewing, and then to Snake River Brewing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming before making his return to Great Adirondack as the Head Brewer. Finally in 2011, Paul decided he was ready to head home to Wooster with his extensive brewing knowledge in tow to partner with his brother and father and open a brewery of their very own.
JAFB is a local brewery focused on helping to build the community around them, and of course, providing the town of Wooster with some awesome beers! Although beer lovers in surrounding areas would love to see it, JAFB is in no rush to start canning or bottling their beers; they prefer to focus on the “Brewery First” approach that has helped so many other breweries become successful.
JAFB’s award-winning beer ranges across a variety of styles, from the Wooster New Stout – winner of the 2014 Great American Beer Fest award - to JAF IPA – Best in Show winner at Fat Head’s annual Celebration of the Hop IPA Festival - to a Saison and Belgian Pale Ale. Their 15 house taps are consistently rotating to keep things fresh, so chances are good if you stop by that they’ll have something new on tap, as well as a range of styles to satisfy any beer drinker.
For FeBREWary this month, you can check out JAFB’s Red Ale, a hearty American Amber with sweet malt flavor, on tap at all The Rail locations!
